When writers work to create new works of drama, they have many goals that they set for themselves. Making an entertaining plot, interesting characters, and creating an important major conflict are all significant things that writers must consider. However, one of the most crucial things for writers to remember is how the audience enjoys and understands the work in an entertaining way. Using one of the most commonly used literary devices, the dramatic irony is a perfect solution to allow the audience enjoy works of drama. Through dramatic irony, tension is created in the work as the irony is further developed to reveal themes in the story. One of the strongest devices, dramatic irony, has been used by most of writers and usually brought successful results. The use of dramatic irony in a literary works or movie functions as an important element to emphasize its theme. There are two examples that use dramatic irony in such a way to bring more powerful impact.

There is a famous play which has been praised as a work that has dramatic irony, a doll’s house. In a Doll’s House, the writer, Henrik Ibsen paints a theme that how woman is sacrificial in his society. To convey his idea successfully to the audience, he put dramatic irony so it helps bring out certain conflicts within a play to deliver his idea. Overall story is about secrets and conflicts of one woman’s marriage. This woman, Nora, borrows money without her husband’s permission and also forges her father’s signature to get loan for husband yet he totally doesn’t know about it. So their marriage seems happy at the beginning of the play but the secret of Nora brings tragic ending. Only Nora, some characters, and audience know what Nora tries to hide the truth. As the story develops, Nora reacts more desperately and shows her change of mental status into nervousness by coming out of the truth. In the scene of masquerade, Nora dances tarantella which requires fast steps that symbolize her desperation. With this scene, the huge tension forms toward revelation of the secret which happens right after masquerade.
