Que1.What is the Industry of crown and carry out industrty attractive test?

Ans. The industry is basically a metal container industry. During  1891 – 1930 Crown Cork & seal were one of the major suppliers of bottle caps. Though they  once got almost bankrupt  in 1920 when their patents ran out , due to severe competition. Then they thought that beer cans can be a success so they started manufacturing beer cans.the metal cans can be made with aluminium and steel or combination of both , which so ever is economical. They attempted to diversify their product range to plastic products and ludicrous products like birds cage.

 Product line: - metal cans for specialized purposes

 Market Range: Domestic and International (LDCs)

 Marketing:  there were technical assistance to the product line followed by problem solving methods

 Production : The main Focus was to develop 2-piece can product line, quality-control and innovative.

 

Industry attractive test:

They  attempted to diversify their  products  to plastic range products ,they realised  for  the  specific product  they  require larger continental  cans  which incur  more personnel cost , which lead the company  to almost  bankruptcy.

  1. How well Crown did under the leadership of Connelly and what were the key to their success.

Connelly had visions as a CEO, and developed a strategy and specific culture to reinforce these. He pushed ahead his strategy through Frugality, demanding goals, and maximizing the organization’s potential. Here are some specifications that he took, which had a positive impact:

  • Focused on beverage & aerosol high-growth segments
  • Committed to customer service, just-in-time delivery
  • Concentrated on cost reduction, in both manufacturing and R&D
  • Developed competency in manufacturing filling equipment solutions
  • Expanded internationally
  • Decentralized responsibility at the plan level to empower plant managers
  • Paid himself a low salary

At the time that Connelly stepped up as president of Crown Cork the company was at the edge of bankruptcy. Once Connelly took the helm of the company the vision changed, to emphasize cost efficiency, quality and customer service.

This was done by recognizing Crown’s position as a small producer and developed a product line built around the company’s traditional strengths in metal forming and fabrication. Also, Connelly closed inefficient fabrication plants.

Q3. In light of changes happening in the industry how shall Avery responds? Is it the time to change the Crown strategy?

ANS. After a great run in the metal can production, the company should decide which method of processing should be used considering the challenges such as packaging limitations, cost limitations and newer opportunities. With an increasing demand of safer foods without sacrificing the nutritional value, shelf life or quality of the food, consumers have started to acknowledge their roles as smart buyers. Therefore, to know what process improvements must be brought in the packaging department, for example, one should select the processing technology, keeping in mind the properties such as pH, phase, stability and moisture content. Next aim would be to eliminate the target agents that are specified. Thus it is a great time to explore and adopt a new improved strategy. Making Avery to diversify into newer sections of the industry.
