In the film 42-Up, it interviews children and their different stages in life to see the choices and feelings they have on their future and current life. The girls and boys who were interviewed came from different households, whether they came from rich or poor families. As the film progresses, the working class to the upper class children have different influences which sway their choices in their future through education, social life, and culture. The children who grew up in the upper class will make better decisions and achieve greater accomplishments in life compared to children who grew up with in a working class family.
The film is a unique and clever way to demonstrate the relationship between an individual’s future life and how successful they will become. The upper class children were very educated and had big hopes for their future. They wanted to either help the poor or to gain power through high leveled careers. The pressures from parents probably motivated them to do well in school and achieve a good career. On the other hand, children who came from lower income families were less educated, however got reasonable jobs so they can afford a house and the basic needs in life. Education seems to be a great factor to determine the individual’s future income. From the film, people like Bruce and John were very successful and both went to boarding school. Bruce studied math at Oxford and graduated while John went to west minister school and became a barrister. The better the education a child has will result better paying jobs compared to a lower income family.
Many of the children were asked questions about marriage and what they thought about it. Many of the girls desired to get married and have children while the boys didn’t want to get married or be associated with girls. As the years go on, those views change due to maturity and their influences from parents and friends.
