I chose Dirty Dancing as my movie because it is my all time favorite movie! In the first dance scene, the staff is in their quarters dancing to what is called “dirty dancing.” Although choreographed by Kenny Ortega, in my opinion, this is probably a Fosse inspired type of dance full of body grinding, sensuality, and sexuality.
The fist scene with the kids dancing in the staff quarters is less than memorable. It looks like a high school make out session or a big orgy. I feel as though there could have been more stylized dancing with technical movements in addition to the slow grind. I also felt as though the beginning music was too soft and needed to thump more. When things speed up, the dance changed but it was repetitive and wasn’t very spectacular.
The second scene in Johnny’s room was good because of its honest sensuality. You could feel the chemistry and desire between Johnny and Baby as a wonderful form of foreplay without being sleazy or untasteful.
I also like they way the movie makes fun of the space and dynamics necessary for a real cha cha by having the characters “invade” each others space. Baby and Johnny then turn it into an interpretive dance while singing and moving to the lyrics of the music.
My favorite dance sequence was the “I’ve Had the Time of My Life” finale. It was a fusion of Ballroom, Latin, modern, jazz, and freestyle. Baby’s dress flowed to accentuate her movements and she looked beautiful. It was rewarding to watch Baby’s dancing come full circle. She performed not only technically, but emotionally as well. The integration of the different styles stimulated y mind and made it interesting to watch the screen fill with vibrancy, talent, and colors. The final lift was the rise from beginning dancer to expert and from young lady to woman. It symbolized her trusting of herself as well as Johnny and conquering her fears.
