"The King's Speech" (2010) is a movie I selected for my comparison paper, as I was moving through the list of the optional movies from the given list, this name suddenly caught my sight because I was considering this movie to view for many time. So, I hurriedly selected it for my comparison paper and started watching it with so much interest.
The King's Speech is the story about a former British King George VI (The Guardian)which was formerly the Prince Albert Frederick Arthur George, Duke of York and his constant struggle against his deficiency of stuttering or stammering. He deals with that problem whole heartedly and got through this with all his physical, psychological and social struggle. The character of the future king was played by the actor Colin Firth, he shows his personal struggle against all the hurdles created by the people involved around him. He plays that character so firmly that i almost believed that Colin stutters in his real life too. King George VI, who was also the father of present day Queen Elizabeth 2, shows his lifelong struggle to overcome his speech impediment by the help of his wife Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) who carried him to a person named Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush). This movie is also about the dedication, faith and true love of Albert's wife Elizabeth, who will not give up trying for her husband. She always have faith on him in all the movie that he can control stuttering and will be the future king in place of his father.
Logue was certain about his methods and thinks that without even a proper degree for that field, he can help Albert out of the situation and relentlessly pushing him to the limits so that he can have fluent control on his voice. His efforts and methods bore fruit and they were producing moments of fluency and rhythm in his speech. Even the recorded audio tape that was recorded during one of his procedures in full noise that Logue has given the future king during his way back home was without any stammering when he heard it after some days. This shows that Logue has something unique and different from others, which was working and producing positive results for the patients.
As per historical point of view, King George V was pretty much concerned about the immediate future of his country's monarchy because his eldest son who was first in line for the throne was in a relationship with a divorcee woman and that is why he was not suitable for that choice. While King's second son Albert due to his speech impediment could not capture the confidence of his public and due to this they could not get into war against Hitler's army. This movie is also about the ability of a king to rally his nation to the war front. King George VI's first major test was the speech , he had to deliver before his nation in order to take them in confidence and get them ready for the war against the German Nazis army led by Hitler (Rogerbert). His past experiences were totally failed always whenever he tried to stand in front of a microphone but this time he delivers a flawless speech, which proved Albert to be a confident leader and a true king of his nation.
