This essay will be an analysis of the 2014‟s American movie „The Fault in Our Stars‟. It is a stereotypical of the romantic Dramatic genre directed by Josh Boone, based on the same titled novel by John Green. The movie‟s actors are: Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, and Nat Wolff, with Laura Dern, Sam Trammell, and Willem Dafoe playing supporting roles. This film explores the complexity of love and the obstacles that are preventing love between Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodly), a 16-year-old cancer patient, who meets and falls in love with Augustus Waters (Ansel Elgort), a teen from her cancer support group.“The development of The Fault in Our Stars began in January 2012 when Fox 2000, a division of 20th Century Fox, adapted to the novel into a feature film. Principal photography began on August 26, 2013, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States, with a few additional days in Amsterdam. The Fault in Our Stars was released on June 6, 2014, in the United States to positive critical reception, with praise going to Woodley's performance as well as the script. The film was also a blockbuster, becoming number one at the box office during its opening weekend.” By looking at the mise-en-scene we notice that the film is stereotypical of the romantic drama genre as the location, costume, props, colors and everything seen on the screen. Set in two different countries; mainly in Indianapolis; Indiana, it is where Gus and Hazel fall in love. The other part is set in Amsterdam. The costumes of the characters are also stereotypical, jeans, converse, leather jackets (all that qualify young teens); you would expect to see what the teens want. The props in this film do not appear in every genre, but as Romantic Dramas; about love‟s complexity and dramatic obstacles‟ facing. It is not unusual For Hazel to carry around an oxygen tank everywhere for a 16 year old child. The prop helps portray emotion and shock as it‟s not something habitual. Captions are used throughout the trailer, when the film is realized and informing audience how “Life doesn't have to be perfect, for love to be extraordinary”. This essay clarifies how help and support facilitate the overcoming of cancer, adding to that the importance of love in human beings life. Even if death is unavoidable and could take away the most cherished ones, living a true love story is worth the suffering that comes after all.
