The Lack of Availability of Water in India

While the government has conducted cleanliness and sanitation campaigns successfully across India, the one major flaw in them has been the lack of availability of water. If I had absolute political power for a day I would make it my top priority to redirect water supply so that it reaches even the farthest corners of the country. I would fast-track conservation programmes and schemes and put more funding into awareness programmes aimed to educate people about water conservation. Apart from this, I'll also make it mandatory for all building plans to be approved only once they get a clearance as to wether appropriate rainwater-harvesting measures are present. I will also make it mandatory for all government building, be it offices, schools, hospitals, or colleges, to have groundwater management systems in place. I would also create a R&D team aimed at developing energy-efficient technology to desalinate water. An energy friendly version of the desalination plants used by the gulf countries would solve India's scarcity problem to a large extent. Water scarcity is an immediate problem and we cannot hope to become a superpower if we still live in a time where people have to walk miles just to obtain drinking water.
