1. Timeline fugui’s family

1940 - The story begins in the 1940’s. Fugui’s is at that time around 30 years. Together with his wife and daughter is he part of a wealthy family. He is gambling too much and loses his family property. His wife is leaving him and she takes their daughter with her.

1941 - Some time later Fugui’s wife comes back with his daughter and new born son and they start a normal live without luxury and gambling. Fugui’s support his family by doing shadow puppet shows. If every thing seems to get better with Fugui’s family Fugui must fight in the civil war against the communists.

1942 - Fugui’s survives and returns a year later back to his wife and kids. The communists of Mao have won the war so changes are going on in the village.

1951 - A decade later is the time of ‘’the great leap forward’’ the village changes into quickly. There is one central kitchen were everyone can get food. And everyone needs to contribute to the supply of iron. One-day Fugui’s son has to help melting iron and in an accident he dies. A local chief is responsible for his dead. Later it turned out that this local chief was a friend of Fugui’s.

1961 - The story moves again to ten years later in the industrial revolution. The village chief suggests the daughter of Fugui’s to marry with a leader of a local factory. The couple falls in love and marries. Some time later the girl is pregnant.

1961 - Months later the child will be born in the hospital. Fugui and Jiazhen are here to support their daughter. They noticed in the hospital that there were no real doctors present. They were afraid that the young student could not handle it. Everything seen to go perfect and the baby is born. But then the mother started to bleed and the nurses panicked.
