Part 2- Low-Power-Distance
1. One country that holds the cultural dimension, low-power-distance, is Sweden. Low-power distance culture spreads the power more evenly distributed throughout the citizens. In this type of culture, students actively participate in discussions and can challenge their teachers. In relationships and friendships, friends and partners are picked on the basis of personality, appearance, and the liking of these. Low-power-distance cultures confront a friend, coworker, partner, or supervisor assertively. Someone who feels as if they’re being treated unfairly is expected to bring up and talk about the problem to their boss.
2. Workplace-Boss-Employee
The opposite of low-power-distance is high-power-distance. In high-power distance, direct confrontation and assertiveness is usually viewed as negative when directed at an authoritative figure. Problems could arise if someone that was low-power-distance approached their boss who was high-power-distance. The boss could view the confrontation as disobedient and scold or fire the employee. One way to improve this intercultural communication is to communicate calmly to the boss the issues you are having and explain to them how you feel and together brainstorm ways about how to fix it.
