How can the different ways of knowing help us to distinguish between something that is true and something that is believed to be true?
The title emphasizes "truth" in two different circumstances. I take the view that one is when the truth is proven with evidence, and the other is a believed truth, which is a claim that suggests something is true. Moreover, believed truth can be intuitive. The reason why I say it is intuitive because we feel like something is right then we assume something is right. Daniel Patrick Moynihan says "Everybody is entitled to their own opinion, but they're not entitled to their own facts". I insist that truth involves certainty. There need to be evidences supporting, and the evidences must be able to view by anyone. Differences in truth only exist when we doubt and challenge its validity and sources of evidence. To examine the validity of a truth we need to know where does the truth come from or how is it created. Perception, reason, emotion and language .
Sense perception is more subjective knowledge, because we perceive the truth using our own senses and judge it using our own concept. Hearing, sight , touch, taste and smell are the most common ways. We use different one of them to identity something depends on the situation. Art is one way to express ideas and feeling. What make art unique from other subjects is that painting has a very board meaning when different people view it in different angle, unlike mathematics which has only one right answer. For instance, Abstract Expressionism is a style of painting in which the painter shows his personality and personal emotional expression. From the quote of Hans Hofmann, American abstract expressionist, "A work of art is a world in itself reflecting senses and emotion of the artist's world"
Is that statement true or only the painter claims it? Since it is abstract, we cannot clearly tell what is the content of the painting. But by looking at bright or dull colors used, we can identify the emotion of the artist whether he is happy or sad. Even though the shapes or objects that display in the painting may not seem like anything to us. After hearing the description of how the painter create the piece and what does each object represent. Then we are able to sum up that the piece actually match with how he describe and display the painter's feeling. From information that we see or heard, we know it is true that painting does reflect about the artist himself, not he claim he does.
Emotion is an expression of our own feeling. If I put more emotion when I am claiming something, does it make it a truth? Emotion is more like personal knowledge, by saying that I mean emotion is a reflection of how we feel toward surounding. Moreover, We are appealing to our intuitive self and our emotions. We are more likely to believe something that please us
