1.0: Introduction

        The Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sendirian Berhad (Second Automobile Manufacturer Private Limited), usually abbreviated to Perodua is Malaysia's second largest automobile manufacturer after Proton. Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd,  Perodua was established in 1993, which is a joint venture company between Malaysian and Japanese partners. The company started operations in 1994 and Perodua Kancil was introduced to the Malaysian market in August the same year. Until now, the following vehicles have rolled out of the Perodua plant. At end of May 2011, Perodua has sold some 1.9 million units of vehicles of various models.

The shareholders of Perodua are UMW Corporation Sdn Bhd 38%, MBM Resources Berhad 20%, Daihatsu Motor Co. Ltd 20%, PNB Equity Resource Corporation Sdn Berhad 10%, Daihatsu (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd 5%, Mitsui & Co. Ltd 4.2% and Mitsui & Co, (Asia Pacific) Pte Ltd 2.8%. 

        Perodua headquarters is located on an 138-hectare site in Sungai Choh, Rawang, Selangor Darul Ehsan. It houses among others Perodua corporate building, R&D testing laboratories and styling studio, vehicle test track, manufacturing plant, engine plant, pre-delivery inspection area, vehicle distribution stockyard and parts warehouse. To date, PSSB has 41 sales branches and 139 sales dealers nationwide to serve its customers efficiently. It also has 46 service branches and 117 service outlets throughout Malaysia for customers’ convenience.

        Perodua mainly produces minicars and superminis and does not have models in the same market segments as Proton. They do not design or engineer their main components such as engine and transmission in house. Perodua cars have historically used Daihatsu component designs. Daihatsu held a 20 % stake in Perodua at the company's launch, increasing this to 25 % in 2001 and then to 35 %. In 2004, Perodua started assembling the Toyota Avanza at their headquarter in Rawang, for sale in Malaysia. Not just that, the plant currently has the capacity to produce 250,000 units per annum on 2-shift cycle as the total number of manpower of Perodua was some 10,000 staff as of June 2009.

In Perlis, there is only one branch and dealership of Perodua Sales Sdn. Bhd which located in Kangar with 47 employees consist of 28 sales department and 19 services department. The branch initially located at Pengkalan Asam, Perlis in 1993 before moving to a new building in Kangar in 2005. The branch linked with the services and workshop centre located besides its building, established in July 2013.

1.2: Nature of Business

        Perodua is a company that manufactures cars to fulfill domestic’s demands. Perodua also have service centre that helps their customers to service their cars. For Perodua’s Perlis Branch, there are two different branches which include Sales Branch and Service Centre. Both are located next to each other, but perform different tasks and have different goals to be achieved.
