The Merger of Fairbanks Engineering and Westmont Corporation
Fairbanks with some 480 employees and Westmont Corporation with 190 employees seemed to be perfectly suited for a merger as both the companies complemented each other’s strengths as a business firm. Westmont was noticeably better than Fairbanks in professional and technical aspects. At the same time Fairbanks had a very strong client base. Hence there was a huge possibility that this marriage between Fairbanks and Westmont would work out.
However the present day scenario demonstrates a not so favorable situation for the firm to prosper.
The following table describes the present day problems of the company and proposed solutions to tackle the issues in the year ahead.
S.No. | Problems | Recommendations |
1. | Individuals who worked in top levels at Westmont felt they were being given subordinate positions in Fairbanks | The senior and more experienced employees of Westmont should be given a chance to switch their roles in the company and allowed to apply for better profiles available in Fairbanks. |
2. | A lot of grapevine communication took place | The Human Resources Department should intervene in such issues and make sure grapevine is eliminated at the grassroots level. Such a step was not taken by the HRs when the merger happened. They should conduct counseling sessions in order to change the perception of the employees. |
3. | Salary hike was offered to Westmont influentials | Instead of doing so, the company should divide the employees in groups and assign them minor projects and based on their performance they will be paid incentives despite the position they hold in the company. They should conduct proper appraisals instead of giving random hike. |
4. | The approach taken by the top management to bridge the gap between the 2 parties was somehow not in line with the interests if the staff | The top management should consist of professionals from both the companies so that interests of each of the parties is taken care of and the employees feel that the decision taken is fair |
5. | Projects were behind schedule and profits declined | This was due to lack of cooperation between the personnels. Team building exercises in the workplace should be conducted at regular intervals with a proper mix of individuals from both the firms. |
