Alcoholic beverages are drinks containing ethyl alcohol which is commonly referred to as ethanol. Alcoholic beverages are divided into three general classes for taxation and regulation of production which are beers, wines, and spirits or distilled beverages. Alcoholic beverages are legally consumed with however most countries having laws regulating their production, sale, and consumption. Such like laws are promulgated and implemented so as to reduce scenarios of alcohol abuse which is defined as a psychiatric diagnosis describing the recurring use of alcoholic beverages despite its negative consequences. Individuals who abuse alcohol are referred to as alcoholics and are broadly classified into two types namely: those who have anti-social and pleasure-seeking tendencies and those who are anxiety-ridden- people who are able to go without drinking for long periods of time but are unable to control themselves once they start.

In the light of this, several governments across the globe have resorted to imposing strict regulations production, sale, and consumption of alcohol. Tangible examples such laws include; the ban of sale of alcohol to persons under the age of 18years, advertising not permitted when 15% of viewing audience is between 10 and18years which is the legal drinking age and the imposing of special labeling and bottling requirements so that alcoholic products are easily distinguishable from non-alcoholic products to mention but a few. Even under such a pretext some sections of the South African government are advocating for the upping of such like restriction on alcoholic beverages so as to reduce effects of societal decay being imposed by the ‘Alcohol’ phenomenon. Hence this writing serves to explore the pros and cons of the alcohol and come up with a logical and well balanced conclusion.
