Amphetamines
Amphetamines seemed to be a recent drug that was created to help with Attention Defecate/ Hyperactivity Disorder and Narcolepsy. I researched to find more of a history, immediate effects and long-term effects on the brain.
Amphetamines were first created in a lab around 1887. A German chemist by the name of L. Edelean was credited with noting the stimulating effect. Around the early 1930’s amphetamine was recognized as a Central Nervous System stimulant and respiratory stimulant. During this discovery medical professionals created a solution for nasal congestion (Benzedrine) in an inhaler. Currently medical professionals suggest amphetamines for ADHD, narcolepsy, and some obesity issues. During World War II the military used amphetamines to increase alertness, increase endurance and mood enhancement. During the 1960’s & 1970’s is when medical professionals started to notice a rise in the abuse of this drug.
When amphetamines is administered the brain reacts by neurotransmitters release dopamine and norepinephrine from nerve endings to the brain. When the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord are activated, mental focus, ability to stay awake, and ability to concentrate are improved. These affects seem to be very positive and wanted by most people. The long term effects of amphetamines are numerous; dizziness, increased heart rate, difficulty breathing, ulcers, skin disorders, convulsion, coma, or death just name a few. Why is something with so many bad side effects still in use today? Some studies are studying if the benefits outweigh the ill side effects.
As a 31 year old mother of two, I have been diagnosed ADHD, OCD, and clinical depression. I use medical amphetamines daily. It is the only medical help I have for my conditions. I do wish there was another option. I do not like the adverse side effects when the chemical only
