1.1 Background

Bayonne Packaging, Inc. was founded in 1964 as a specialty packaging paper converter. The company produces customized complex-design packaging for promotional materials, software, luxury beverages, gift food and candy for industrial customers. Through the rapid growth of the paper packaging industry during the 1980s the company performed pretty well. But now they have reached a point of stagnation and they are not able to hit their targets in costs, quality or time any more.

1.2 Strategy

Bayonne Packaging, Inc. works closely with the customers to develop the artwork and packaging design, which is finally verified in a customer approval. Bayonne's process covers every step, from product development and in-house production, to final delivery. At the moment Bayonne is pushing into new markets, for example, candy packaging. They started to price aggressively to get more orders and gain new customers. In comparison to competitors, Bayonne is able to produce complex and highly customized products. They are innovative and have got a wide range of products, with which they cover different industries.

1.3 Production Process

As a company which delivers only on customer request, their products are highly differentiated - Bayonne is after definition a Job Shop; Bayonne produces step by step. First of all the product is developed in the Composition Department in collaboration with the customer. After the final composition and the verification of the customer the production starts in the Sheet Department, where roll stock is turned into sheets of paper. The following step takes place in the Printing Department where the sheets receive their high quality printing.
