Case Study

Jill recently paid a visit to her counselor and expressed her cultural up bring is that of Asian American, and her family follow all traditions, to her dismay the counselor Joe is of no help, he tells her that his job description calls for him to work in rural community and he has no former training on how to deal with her culture, just those that are from the eastern part of Europe, because of this he can’t give her any direction when it comes to her culture he offers his apologize and continue on with the session (Argosy, 2016).

When a person decided to become a counselor it important that they learn every aspect of the American Psychological Association, APA, the principle and code of conduct are in place to protect the counselor and the client.  Joe should have resorted to the APA guide before answering his client to learn what his responsibility is as a counselor and how to best help Jill.

Again the first rule is to obtain Informed Consent to Therapy, once he has obtained this from Jill he can then address the cultural difference and possibly refer her to someone that is more diversely trained in Asian culture.   It seems that Joes feels that since he works in rural area he is not required to have the diverse training needed in order to help his client, he should have at that point, told Jill that he will do his best to refer he to someone that has this type of training and get back with her on how to help her address her issue, instead of telling her he is not required to know this.  According to “Standard 1 Resolving Ethical Issues” (American Psychological Association, 2016).  1.02 speaks on conflict between governing legal authority, ethics and law, this protect the client from being mistreated or violation of their human rights.
