Cohabiting

Many young couples thinking of marriage want to ensure that their relationship will preserver to last a lifetime. After all, that is the ideal duration of a marriage. It seems to have become a global trend for couples to cohabitate before saying “I do” in hopes that it will lead to a more stable union. Unfortunately for them however, a substantial amount of research suggests that cohabitation is not a predictor for a happy and long-lived marriage. Cohabitation has commonly become the path that leads to an unhealthy relationship and eventually divorce. Only about half of the couples who live together end up at the altar. However, those who do marry have a 50 percent chance of being divorced compared to a 20 percent chance for a couple who did not cohabitate prior to marriage. In certain European countries it is determined to be about 80 percent higher. Ignoring the statistics, people today are more commonly making the decision to live with one another.

Over time, cohabitation has become a popular and socially accepted circumstance for any couple in a romantic relationship. Cohabitation as well as premarital sex has become such a norm and the younger generations are influenced by seeing similar situations on television. They do not have the same morals and values that the previous generations do. Since the newer generations are used to seeing failed relationships more so than successful ones, they are less likely to believe in lasting love. That creates a mindset of not needing to put in the extra effort to keep their relationship afloat since it has already been predicted to be unsuccessful.

There are several reasons as to why couples turn to cohabitation. The fear of divorce lingers amongst them and some couples believe they are preventing it by allowing themselves to share a home before anything else. People see it as an opportunity to get a feel for the married life, a sort of trial marriage. They want to make sure that their partner is the right one for them and test their compatibility. Many folks do not believe that dating is enough in fact, the dating game is simply that: a game. The next step to a more stable relationship is to move in together.
