Commitment everyone has at some point in their life needed to make a commitment to something. This could be a commitment to a loved one or a commitment to a goal. How does one actually attain commitment are there steps that a person can take to make sure that their commitment lasts? The answer to these questions is yes. There are steps that a person can take to attain commitment and make sure their relationship or goals are followed through. Take my commitment to attain my college degree. For a commitment to a goal to work a person must foster commitment. For them to do this all they need to follow is nine simple steps: look for meaning; transform a “should” to a want; choose commitment; enact commitment; go public; set priorities; review commitments; maintain hope; and use structured voluntary activities (Bolt, 2004).

To attain my goal at receiving my college degree I first had to look for meaning in my commitment. I had to figure out what long term commitment would I receive from going to college. I found out that going back to college would better my chances at obtaining a well respected job. The next step was to change my “should” to a “want”. This helped me by just standing by and talking about going back to college and making into a want so I would act upon it. This also helps me to stay on task with class work. Instead of saying “I should do” I change it to “I want to”. This helps get motivated to do my homework. Choosing commitments and enacting commitments go hand in hand. These are the decisions and actions that one chooses. I chose to go to college and acted upon it and did so. This is because my mother gave me the option to go back. She stated that it was up to me but I would benefit me in the long run. I listened to her words and they made perfect sense. So I decided to act and make the commitment to go back to school.
