Throughout society, conformity is evident on all levels. People will conform to something as simple as an answer asked by a teacher, or something as large as how they live their lives. Prior research, such as the Asch experiment clearly shows that given the right environment people will conform to simple matters. When given a simple question, even if the subject knows the correct answer, it is very likely that he/she will conform to others answers. Through psychological studies, researchers have determined a reason why people do this. The answer is simply: humans have a desire to fit in with the people around them. The next question is how does this affect them? It is thought to be, or at least has never been tested, that while conforming there will be no significant change in heart rate. If a subject were to defer his/her own answer just to not look stupid, can this cause a change in heart rate? If the researcher's findings are that there is a spike in heart rate, this could lead to the assumption that people who are more likely to conform put more stress on their heart than others. Conforming while answering a problem will affect the heart rate causing it to rise, adding more stress on the heart.
