Critical Though Questions
1.) I feel that physical education and psychology should be combined into counseling psychology to provide training for those who wish to become a sports psychologist. When these two areas of study come together, it will also help understand child development and more issues that are faced by children in competitive sports.
2.) I do not believe that someone who is trained in the area of physical education should be considered a psychologist, because there is more to the science and application of psychology than the elements studied in physical education. The AAASP addresses this concern by suggesting the AAASP become an accredited program to ensure quality and consistency of academic training.
3.) I do feel that the AAASP should pursue the avenue of accrediting sport psychology. The AAASP should show that the program is, indeed, critical to the mission of the university by showing how many students have been interested and pursued this type of education.
4.) I do believe that multicultural training can help members of diverse teams be more accepting of one another because it would allow a better understanding of the differences amongst cultures. I think that celebrating diversity amongst team members is a great example. It would be as simple as speaking about different athletes from different cultures and their background, family life, and achievements. Another way this could be done is by sharing stories from each team member and being accepting and willing to participate.
5.) I feel that the universalistic model would be a better approach in providing multicultural training to minority athletes because it teaches cultural sensitivity and how to be culturally competent.
