‘Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning.’
“Miss Davis, will you please put up the book, and listen to the lesson, for once?” Mr. Browning asked me with an arched brow.
“’Quoth the Raven “Never More”’,” I shut my black journal, into which I had copied my favorite poems from Poe’s works.
“Yes, as I was saying…” He went on into lessons on chemistry. God, is he boring! Why do I even need this class?
I look over to my best friend, Matthew Maxwell, who turns his head toward me. He pretends to shoot himself with his hand. I roll my eyes and mouth ‘Right back at cha.’
The bell rings. I grab my book and school bag and wait for Matt. When he gets to me I start walking again. We stop when we get to our lockers, which are side by side thanks to some chick who switched him out.
“Did you zone out again or did you just not wanna listen to Browning?” He asks me, playfully shoving me out of his way to get to his locker, when he could’ve walked around.
“Shut up, Maxwell! You and I both know that I don’t concentrate easily!”
“Well you seem to concentrate on Poe pretty easily!” He retorts with that smirk he has that, oddly enough, makes me want to kiss him. Instead I just roll my eyes, slam my locker shut, and walk away, smirking myself.
I get about five feet away and I hear his locker shut. Next thing I know he slings his arm around my shoulders and puts me in one of his random headlocks. I resist as much as I can but I can’t get loose.
“Matthew!” I manage to choke out.
He releases me. I slap him as hard as I can on the arm. He just laughs and we walk out of the school together.
