The article that I chose to read regarding the benefits of marriage and family life for work, health or emotional well-being is entitled: The Effects of Marriage on Health: A synthesis of Recent Research Evidence by Robert Wood, Brian Goesling and Sarah Avellar.
The article that chose talks about the suggestion that marriage can be beneficial economically, mentally and in physical health. In the beginning of the article is said that though health and marriage are well established it is not imply that marriage cause better health. " Instead, healthier people may be more likely that those who are less healthy to get and stay married, because that may be considered more desirable marriage partners in terms of their various attributes" (Wood, Goesling & Avellar 2).
It is said that marriage is beneficial economically in that a marriage may result in their being two incomes and because of this they have lower stress levels which results in less health problems . There are four specific health outcomes those being:
Health Behaviors
It has been found that when a person enters into a marriage they are more likely to take part in healthy behaviors. But this is not always the case it has be documented that marriage is associated with modest weight gain in both men and women, but the weight gain is not enough to cause serious health issues. " The pattern of these effects is mixed-with marriage associated with healthier behaviors in some cases and less healthy in others" (Wood, Goesling & Avellar 18).
Healthcare Access and Use
There is evidence that those that are married are able to access better insurance than those that are not married. It is also shown that those that are married incur lower medical costs than those that are single or widowed. It is also been shown that married individuals have shorter
