Sensation and Perception Review
1. One example I have noted of sensation in my daily life is when I have football practice in the morning and I am lying down in the wet grass, I can feel the cold damp grass on my skin. This would qualify as a sensation because my nervous system and sensory receptors receive the feeling or sensation once the grass makes contact with my skin.
2. An example of absolute threshold in my life would be how well I can hear a ticking clock in my room and in other rooms in my house. This qualifies as an example of absolute threshold because this shows the minimum stimulation I need to detect the sound of a ticking clock in my house.
3. One example of signal detection theory in my life would be after watching a scary movie before going to bed, I would be paranoid at every little sound I would hear because of how scared I was. This qualifies as a signal detection theory example because every time I got scared of a sound, it would always be a false alarm.
4. An example of the difference threshold would be when I went to go get my haircut. One time I went for a haircut and I noticed that there was a new person that was cutting my hair. I told her to cut about an inch off and then I started reading a Sports Illustrated magazine. She must have been very nervous since she was new, so when it was over I asked if she cut any hair off, and she did but only 1/16th of an inch. I didn't notice because it was such a small amount. This qualifies as a difference threshold example because when she cut off the 1/16th of an inch, it didn't hit my difference threshold.
5. Sensory adaptation happens to me when my mother and I drive by the compost site in Tinton Falls and we notice the horrible smell right away and can't stand it. However, after a little while we get used to the smell and it doesn't affect my mother or me anymore. This qualifies as a sensory adaptation because we both grew accustomed to the smell after some time and were able to tolerate it.
6. An example of dark adaptation in my life would be when I turn off the lights to go to bed and sit in my bed, at first it is pitch black and I cannot see anything in my room. After a little bit of time, I become able to see things like my ceiling fan, my couch, and my closet more clearly. This qualifies as dark adaptation because it took me time to get accustomed to the darkness of my room but once I did, I could see distinct furniture.
7. An example of the balance function of my ear would be if I stood next to my kitchen table and put my hand on it and put my feet close together trying to keep my balance. If I started shaking my head, which would affect my inner ear function, which would make it harder for me to, keep my balance. This qualifies as the balance function
