Social Structure Theories

Introduction

The article I chose to discuss is on the topic of “Prostitution Among American Routes”. Prostitution is a highly debated issue in the nation and globally. Human trafficking is correlated as an exploitation measure of prostitution actions which differ from demographics and societies, however, is highly utilized to gain profit. Prostitution is considered prevalent in the regions of factories, underground organizations, organized crime groups, war zones, private residences, and farmlands (Mettimano, 2004). The perpetrators seek out the populated countries that are deprived of modernization, poverty encountered, and that coerce young children and women by promising a better life, and free into a nation of jobs. Upon arrival, their documents are immediately taken, and forced to prostitute, and physically injured.

Labeling Theory

When violating the perceptions of societal norms, it is perceived as deviant, a criminal act, and sociological punishment plays a role when commissioning with the behavior of deviance or criminal act which is a violation of the state. In society today, society perceives forms of violation to be; drug and alcohol abuse, drag queens, deliberately setting fires, prostitution, telling lies, gambling excessively, public nudity, and refusal to clean one’s body are a few (Alder, Muller, & Laufer, 2010). The components of deviance are complex variations which can be seen in eras, locations, groups, and individually. In stating this, there may be one group who perceives the behavior displayed is accepted, however, another group may perceive as acts of deviance. For instance, across the globe many cultures practice ceremonial events, one being to circumcise the female. This clitoridectomy process involves severing the female clitoris from her body with no anesthetic, or hospital setting, primarily so the women has no sexual satisfaction. However, in the United States, the men are commonly circumcised as a sign of cleanliness, and if a female had the procedure done, it would be perceived as an act of defiance, just to mutilate one.

The video continues to demonstrate the illegal acts of prostitution in Mexico. The speaker provided a clear representation of the occurrences that take place in so many areas of the world. I chose the Labeling Theory as the correlation for this video because, it associates with persons who are classified by others to be symbols, reaction, or label (Beckers, 1963, pp.2). This theory perceives the deviance in behavior derives from the classification of society. For the conformity of societal norms which interpret specified behaviors labeled as deviant and correlated with the label that classifies non-deviant and deviance. The labeling theory analytically studies the one bestowing labeling, reasoning behind the choice, and the perspectives of the conclusions in labeling.
