I do volunteer work for the sheriff's department and I am currently working on a campaign called “Shop with the Sheriff”. The program is raising funds for about 100 underprivileged children in the community. I have been working on this project since March. We're about 19 children short from our goal. The biggest problem that we face are the community is unwilling to give to these children. The most used excuse is that “ they should not have children they cannot afford them” or "these children should be taken away from their parents". What I have not disclosed before, is these children are from the local orphanage. It has been an up hill battle. What is sad, the deputies feel if we cannot raise funds to sponsor the hundred then they will not do another program for these children. I have been giving 100 percent, of myself, however when I found out this past week that these children were from the local children orphanage I noticed a change in myself. I became more passionate about the cause that I was working for. I suppose in my subconscious mind I may have thought the same way.
I used the experimental research. After trying several approaches I have found that when I disclosed where the children were selected from, it was only with the disclosure of the orphanage did the potential donor give to the program. By changing my method exposing the orphanage, the community I found had more compassion, and as result their demeanor had also changed. Had I known from the very beginning, chances are that these 100 children would have already been sponsored, and with the goal been reached earlier, then with the time we had left could have been for additional children to added to the list. This next week I am going to test this theory, and see if the disclosure is really necessary. It will be very interesting if this is the case.
