The field of environmental psychology examines the influence that the environment has on human behaviors, experiences, as well as their overall well-being. One well known milestone in the history and development of environmental psychology took place in the early 1902. This is when Willy Hellpach set out to introduce the idea of environmental psychology. He began to study the different environmental temperaments and how they can affect how humans behave. Hellpach continues with his studies with his publications of Geopsyche. Hellpach analyzes the effects of both the climatic and geographical differences in the macro, mezzo, and micro levels. Hellpach’s publications also work to explain the effect of the sun and the moon and its correlation with a person’s behavior pattern. Being in the bachelors program I have been exposed to many of the areas of psychology that explain human behavior and the environmental aspects of psychology but environmental psychology uses information from all the different areas of psychology to study how the environment plays a role in human behavior. In my opinion this is an important area to cover in psychology because the environment can play a role in how high or low a person’s mood and behaviors are at any given time. Many people are known to suffer from a condition known as Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), in the winter that can lead to depression and even suicide. Having an effective study of these conditions is important to helping these behaviors.
