All throughout history we’ve seen so many great individuals challenge the status quo. These people choose to be a voice not only for themselves, but also to people who do not have the courage to express their feelings. This week we’ve had the privilege to read/watch the intriguing works of Suey Park, Geena Rocero, Grace Lee, Grace Lee Boggs, and Margaret Cho.
Suey Park is the woman behind the famous hash tag #NotYourAsianSidekick. Suey’s battle with oppression began at a young age. In Kindergarten she knew there was a divide and she was labeled as different. The other children teased her for the shape of her eyes and the food that she brought for lunch. This made Suey realize that racism is taught. Children are young and can be easily imprinted on by older figures. Racism therefore is passed down through teachings. The hash tag originated from her experiences of oppression. Suey grew up in a world where the idea of beauty is centered white ideals. She felt the pressure to change whatever she could to fit this idea of what the world thought was “beautiful”. It caused her to have self-hatred that led to a variety of problems. Suey was finally able to accept her individuality and overcome her hardships. She is now a voice for people who felt trapped under the pressure to fit into this mold that society created. The hash tag represents a movement to not succumb to stereotypes and prejudice. She wants you to love yourself and empower individuality.
Geena Rocero is a model for the LGBT community. She has made headlines coming out as her true self. Geena challenged the status quo by being a transgendered woman with many accolades. Geena struggled with gender identity. She was born male, but knew that she truly was meant to be female. Geena was fortunate enough to have support from her family and friends. This allowed her to transition with ease. Geena had accomplished all she dreamt of. She was a pageant queen, a model, and most importantly a woman, but there was one thing missing. Geena wanted to come out to the world so she can inspire others to break society’s mold. Geena wanted to show people that you are allowed to be different. This is not only a huge stepping-stone for the LGBT community, but for anyone who feels ashamed to be different. This story inspires people around the world to live their truest self.
