The essence of democracy is freedom. However, if we are to be free we have to have respect for those that we interact with. Most countries are made up of thousands of different minorities that constitute a majority. Democracy is one of the only systems that attempts to represent those individual minorities. Countries who do not respect the minority can not call themselves truly democratic.
The Jasmine revolution is currently occurring throughout the Middle East. For years dictators and rulers who hid behind the veil of Prime Ministers and Presidents are being ousted. Egypt is a very poor country and the government had no respect for minorities. Minorities including the poor and the young. Over the course of thirty years the minority became the majority. The young represent over fifty percent of the population, and the majority of Egyptians live on less than two US dollars a day. When those collective minorities became a majority a revolution took place. The majority will always rule, but to stay in power they must have sincere concern for all of the minorities.
Black, white, yellow, orange, Muslim, Christian, Pakistani, Irish, Australia is truly a multicultural nation, made up of thousands of different minorities. The only reason there is not a revolution occurring in Australia is that the majority have more respect for the minorities. Australia is far from perfect, and there are many minorities that still do it tough. However, there is youth allowance for students who need money whilst studying, unemployment benefits and soup kitchens. Australian citizens have respect for all of the minorities that constitute Australia because each individual citizen is a minority of some sort. Non democratic countries often don’t have the same respect for minorities.
China, a communist society, does not show the same level of respect for many of the minorities. Tibet, is no longer a country, China claimed the land as it’s own.
