Ganga was he daughter of Mountain king Himavan. One day Brahma and devas went to Himavan and asked him to send Ganga with them. They said heaven needs her. King Himavan sends his daughter Ganga to serve the Devas. About the same time life on earth was becoming impossible. The rakshasas were hiding in the ocean during day time and came out during night to destroy things.
Devas did not know where they were. They all asked lord Vishnu for help. He told them they were hiding in the ocean He told them to take the help of sage Agastya. Devas went and asked sage Agastya for help. He offered to help and drank all the water in the ocean. The devas then fought the rakshasas and destroyed them. Later they asked sage Agastya to fill the ocean back with date. But the sage said that he digested it and they have to find another way to fill the ocean.
So the devas again asked Lord Vishnu for help. He told them that King Sagara and his children would help fill the ocean again.
King Sagara was doing penance and Lord Shiva appeared before him and gave him a boon. He said that one of his wife will have sixty thousand courageous sons and the other wife will have one son. He also told the king that the sixty thousand children will die without any heirs.
As time passed king had the children and he was happy. He decided to do Aswamedha sacrifice. Indra came to know about it and stole the horse. King Sagara has sent his children to find the horse. They searched every where and could not find it. Finally they decided to search the Nether world ( Patala lokam). Finally they have found it near sage Kapila's place. They thought he was the one who stole it. But sage Kapila got angry on hearing this and turned them into ashes.
