Prometheus plays a trick on Zeus by cutting up a great ox to make a sacrifice to Zeus. Prometheus then dressed the stomach over the meat and fat, while dressing up the fat over the bones. Zeus shows his anger through hiding fire from the mortal man on earth. Later Zeus would demand that a woman be created who would later be called Pandora, but beautiful evil was the exact name first used by Hesiod in the Theogony. Beautiful evil means through her beauty itself is evil because it will bring evil upon the mortal man. Eight gods team up to create and adorn Pandora. These gods were Hephaestus, Athena, Aphrodite, Hermes, Poseidon, Apollo, Hera, and Zeus. Epimetheus was happy to receive woman on the earth from Zeus, though this is later proved as foolish. This is because she is evil to the mortal man with nature to do evil. What she sows upon man is grief and death through marriage and mischievous children.

Prometheus stole back the fire that Zeus had taken from the mortal man, this angered Zeus and he demanded Hephaestus to create Pandora. Hephaestus and Athena create Pandora from a mixture of earth and water. Hesiod names Pandora “all gifts” because the gods of Olympus all gave her a gift. The Pandora myth is misogynistic because man hates woman for the countless plagues brought upon the earth by Pandora opening the jar. Since Pandora means all giving and she released the evils upon the earth from opening her jar. She is like her own pithos in that a jar is used for bestowing all things that are given in life or as an instrument in giving to others. Hope is trapped in the jar because, while hope is empty and no good according to Hesiod, it is to be secured away so that we would not master the evils that are bestowed upon us by opening the jar. If we had hope then we would become evil and through being hopeless we could build our own hope from the torments of the evil brought on by Pandora’s.
