Snake Goddess, Knossos
Before even looking at the Snake Goddess, I had formed an image in my mind of what I thought a Snake Goddess would look like! Therefore, I think that it has influenced my opinion on this figure. Even after this at first glance I liked the image of the Snake Goddess, but then giving it a closer look I just concluded that I am not a particular fane of it! Let start with what I liked, I like that she is holding a serpent in each hand, after all she is the Snake Goddess! I also like the earth colors that was given to her, the colors make me think of nature the ground, but this is where it stops! I do not particularly like this image for several reasons! One I do not like the bare breast; it has no meaning to me! I just don’t understand what bare breasts have to do with a Snake Goddess, what does it represent?
Second, the cat on her head, what does a cat have to do with snakes, then I looked closer is it even a cat, what is it doing on her head, why are the serpents pointing and looking at this cat? Another dislike is her gown it seems to be made of tiles of some sort, very long and elegant! There is also a lot of detail which is given to her gown and it loses everything with it being open on top and exposing her breast it gives way from all the detain which is given to the gown. All in all nothing makes me think of a goddess. This image of the Snake Goddess does not give me the impression of a goddess. I don’t know why but more of a queen or maybe even a saint could come to mind a noble person yes because of the way she’s dressed , again the detail of the gown ,if not for the bare breast, I don’t understand the meaning of the fancy dress but then bare breast and I don’t like it. I think that is what I am trying to say! Again, I just do not understand or like the cat on her head, I looked at it repeatedly again just to try to give the cat a meaning and I just could
