My definition of social justice is making sure that everyone is treated equally, no matter how clever or rich they are. According to the dictionary social justice is defined as ‘the distribution of advantages and disadvantages within a society’.

Social justice is important to Catholics because it is morally right. In the bible, Jesus treated each individual as individuals, ethics, race, gender and religion did not matter to him. Many Catholics wish to follow in Jesus’s footsteps, following his way of life. His main work was social justice based Jesus helped the lepers and the poor he didn’t stop to judge anyone before he helped them. He just saw a need and did something about it treating everyone equally.

We can find the sources of catholic social teachings in:

Old Testament we can find sources of catholic social teachings in Isaiah: 1 16-17 when he talks about relieving the oppressed and seeking justice do justice to the orphans and to plead for the widow.  Another source of catholic social teaching in the old testament can also be found in Micah 6:8 where its say “this is what Yahwen asks of you only this: to act justly to love tenderly and to walk humbly with your God”. Saying that we should love one another as neighbours and to act justly, to help someone out who is in need. To walk humbly following in Jesus’s footsteps. These are important to Catholics because God wanted us to follow the social teaching and to love our neighbours.

The New Testament we can find sources of catholic social teaching is John 4:20-21 where it talks about how if you boast and say you love God but not your brothers and sisters you are a liar. If you love God you must be able to love your brother and sister as well. Another example of catholic social teaching in the new testament is in Mark 2:27 when he says that the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath. This means that Gods intention by creating the Sabbath day was for men to rest and replenish after 6 long hard days of labour. It was expected that you would praise God during the day.
