Abstract:
This report presents the concept of observing the physical and chemical changes that take place when you mix solid calcium chloride, solid bicarbonate, and a solution of phenol inside a zip-lock bag, and then water is added to the chemicals. We first described the appearance of these chemicals so that we could accurately isolate them in separate corners of the zip lock bag. Then we carefully add the chemicals to the bag. When the chemicals had been placed into the bag, then we lightly shook the bag, allowing the substances to mix. Next, a chemical reaction occurred in which produced a bubbling gas along with a color change that was a pale yellow. After recording our results, we discussed questions pertaining to the elements of the lab, such as the interactions, compositions, etc. In conclusion, we learned that how a chemical reaction takes place and this lab helped us work better as a team, along with enhancing our observation skills too.
Introduction:
The objective of this lab was to build on our current observation and reasoning skills. When we achieved these skills, then we were able to correctly and accurately record data that we gathered during our experiment. The objective ties directly in with the scientific concept of this lab. The concept of the lab was to observe physical/chemical changes that occurred when solid calcium chloride, solid sodium bicarbonate, and a solution of phenol red are isolated in a zip-lock bag, then water is added to the bag of chemicals. Our question was as follows; what happens when these three chemicals are combined with water in a zip-lock bag? If solid calcium chloride, solid sodium bicarbonate, and a solution of phenol are all combined with water inside a zip-lock bag, then the chemicals will chemically react with each other causing a gas along with a color change. We chose this hypothesis because sodium bicarbonate is baking soda which could easily lead to a bubbling gas when combined with calcium chloride and phenol red is a dye which could cause a color change upon reaction.
Methods:
1. We took brief notes on the appearances of the three chemicals----calcium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and phenol red solution.
2. We placed the following amounts of three substances in separate locations in a sealable plastic bag.
a) 1 tablespoon of calcium chloride
b) 1 teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate
c) 10 mL of phenol red indicator solution
3. We squeezed out as much air as possible from the zip-lock bag and then we sealed it. Next, we proceeded to mix the chemicals.
4. When the contents mixed, we carefully observed the changes
