Atkins diet essay

Obesity is a problem that a lot of people are starting to have nowadays, it also results to diabetes. The most common cause for obesity in not having balanced energy, if the energy input is greater than the energy output weight will be gained, however if the energy output is greater than the energy input weight will be lost. There are many symptoms for obesity that are put into short and long term symptoms. Some short term symptoms are like breathlessness, increased sweating, and feeling very tired every day. Long term symptoms are such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, coronary heart diseases, and strokes. Obesity also has many health risks such as type 2 diabetes, cancers, and sleep apnea. It also affects the person’s life by making him have low self-esteem, low confidence levels, and feeling isolated in society. This problem has to be addressed because heart diseases and strokes are the world’s number one cause of death killing 17 million people each year worldwide.

As shown in figure 1.0 the United States is the country that suffers the most from obesity with 30.6% of its population obese, followed by Mexico with 24.2% of its population obese, and the United Kingdom with 23% of its population obese. At 10th place Czech Republic 14.8% of the population is obese, which is half of the amount of the United States’ obesity percentage.

Figure 1.1 shows the percentage of obesity among adults both men and woman in the United States. Adults over 60 and over are more likely to be obese than younger adults. Among men there wasn’t a big difference. However 42.3 percent of women that are 60 and over are obese while 31.9 percent of women that are between 20-39 are obese.

A lot of people have lost weight using the Atkins diet and it’s also simple because it is simply just controlling the carb intake which will burn body fat. Atkins diet shows difference quickly, it is not hard such as other diets and you never feel hungry, you can lose weight without exercising. Last but not least it is not as strict as other diets, actually the more you achieve with the weight loss the more fruits and veggies you can add.

The Atkins diet is consisted of three phases, the diet is not about time it’s about how much you lose weight but generally phase one takes almost 2 weeks. Phase one is all about controlling the carbs intake and finding the personal carb balance which is how much carb you can consume while still being able to lose weight, you can eat all types of fish, meat, some types of cheese and vegetables. In phase two you are able to slowly be able to add more foods such as fruits and nuts and dairy products. Phase 3 which is the last phase is where you are so close to finishing your goal of weight loss; in this phase you are trying to gradually increase the daily net carb intake.
