Experiment #3
Properties of Gases
PURPOSE
Investigate the physical and chemical properties of gases. Use these properties to identify gases.
DATA
Data Table: Experiment Results
Gas Flame
reaction Glowing
splint Limewater
reaction Bromothymol
blue reaction
Hydrogen Pop Extinguished Permanent bubbles None
Oxygen Intensifies Reignites None None
Hydrogen & oxygen Boom! Pop - -
Carbon dioxide Extinguished Extinguished Cloudy Turned Green
Alka Seltzer None Extinguished Slightly cloudy Turned yellow
Breath Intensifies Intensifies Very cloudy Slightly turned yellow
OBSERVATIONS
I found it very difficult to produce the 1/3 oxygen 2/3 hydrogen mixture. The wide mouth pipet kept losing the water when I tried to transfer. Also, in the CO2 experiment I found it difficult to get much gas to come through the stopper.
CALCULATIONS
Hydrogen and oxygen combustion reaction
2H2 + O2 2H2O
CONCLUSION/DISCUSSION
I felt that I learned to properly identify some basic gases as well as general techniques on how to extract them. Hydrogen pops with a flame, oxygen intensifies a flame, and carbon dioxide is cloudy in limewater and extinguishes a flame. I found the
