Background

The Wanless review of health care funding (2002) showed that public engagement with health could help to reduce health care costs.  In the UK today, behavioural and lifestyle factors are thought to be major contributors to around half of all deaths. Most of these factors are well known and include smoking, unhealthy diet, excess alcohol consumption and inactive lifestyles. Many of these less healthy lifestyle behaviours are associated with lower socio-economic status (SES).  Reducing health inequalities depends on developing interventions to increase healthy behaviours that are differentially effective in favour of those from disadvantaged backgrounds or target socially disadvantaged groups.
