Introduction
In aquaculture formulated diet and many other feed type has been made to improve and support the growth of certain fish species due to the vary of characteristic, behavior and fish taste.Although much progress has been made in identifying the dietary requirements of the larvae of various aquaculture species, the mass culture of their early larval stages still requires the use of live feeds .Live feed organisms include all plants (phytoplankton) and animal (zooplankton) . Live foods are able to swim in water column and are constantly available to fish and shellfish larvae are likely to stimulate larval feeding response . In an aquatic ecosystem, these live food organisms constitute the most valuable resource for aquaculture. Most of the fish and shellfish larvae in nature feed on small phytoplanktonic and zooplanktonic organisms.
However, natural fish food organisms are usually not abundant in clear pond water, but
are abundant in ponds having greenish water. The green colour indicates the presence of
phytoplankton and other natural food organisms. Artificial larval feeds are no match to live food organisms in terms of acceptance, nutritional and other factors. Feeding habit of fishes in natural water bodies is different among the species but all the fishes require protein rich live food for their better growth, efficient breeding and survival. Advances in live food enrichment technique have helped to boost the importance and potential of live food organisms in the raising of larval aquatic species. The success in the hatchery production of fish fingerlings for stocking in the grow-out production system is largely dependent on the availability of suitable live food for feeding fish larvae, fry and fingerlings
Objective
To identify the type of live feed organism
To study the taxonomy of various live feed organisms.
To study the function of live feed organisms
Material and apparatus
Light Microscope
Glass slide
Paraffin oil
Various live feed samples
Dropper
Water samples
Method
One or few water samples was dropped to glass slide using a dropper
Water samples was observed under the light microscope
Repeat the step 1 to 2 using other water samples contain live feed.
