Report
- Abstract
Insomnia has become one of the significant issues in the UK with around 10 million insomniacs. This report will show the importance of sleep to people and introduce some treatment for insomnia. Women and the elderly are more vulnerable to suffer from insomnia. In addition, there are some drugs which help people overcome this. In this report, the target of new drug will be presented and some recommendations for doing business in this field.
- Introduction
In the United Kingdom, nearly a third of population (37%) suffers from insomnia based on “Epidemiology of insomnia: a longitudinal study in a UK population.” (Morph H, Dunn KM, Lewis M, Boardman HF, Croft P, 2007). To make sure that people need to have good quality of sleep, they have to have enough times to sleep. According to “Insomnia- Management” in Clinical Knowledge Summaries, there is a link between age and time for sleep. Although people want to sleep, they do not want to waste their time for practice exercise to relax in order to overcome insomnia. Moreover, the requirement for help with sleeping problems is increasing so our pharmaceutical company has created new drug. The aim of this report is to emphasize the importance of sleep, some possible effects of insomnia and introduce a new medicine for insomnia to people.
The report will include data from a survey of the nation’s sleep habits, information about insomnia from the University of Cambridge, National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, National Prescribing Centre and National Health Service in the UK.
- Findings
Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (A S Hornby 2010) defines insomnia as “the condition of being unable to sleep”. Some people feel difficulty to fall asleep, but others can sleep too soon and wake up early in the morning and many people meet both difficulties. Based on “Insomnia: Data focused commentary” from the National Prescribing Centre there are two types of insomnia called primary and secondary insomnia. Primary insomnia related to the sleep environment, irregular sleep routine and secondary insomnia has strong connected with psychological problems and physical condition. In addition, insomnia can be described in the long-term and short-term.
Based on the article “Sleep problems in the UK highlighted” (National Health Service 2011), around a third of population in the UK has problems with sleeping and women seem to suffer more from insomnia. Furthermore, the elderly are likely the main target of insomnia. Insomnia also can result in several serious effects. According to “Insomnia” (National Health Service), the result of insomnia is a “vicious cycle”, which includes poor sleep, fatigue and irritability. Moreover, based on the article “Insomnia damages relationship, according to study” BBC news 2011, insomnia can have direct impact on health and indirect effect on breaking relationships.
