1 INTRODUCTION
As practically every material used in engineering design is affected by temperature, its measurement is significant. A thermometer is a commonly used instrument used to measure the difference or change in temperature. A thermometer shows the change of a physical property of a substance, caused by a change in heat to indicate the temperature. There are different types of thermometer that are used to perform in different operations such as:
1. electrical effects
2. expansion effects
3. radiation effects
2 AIM
The objective of this experiment is to achieve understanding of how a thermometer works and how it is used. Also to understand the following features of temperature measurement:
• Engineering applications
• Characteristics of scale graduation and range, ease and accuracy of reading, sensitivity, response, expected accuracy
• Method of procedure
• Any particular technique of use i.e. zero adjustment, depth of immersion, time dependence, etc
3 EQIPMENT
Different equipment is used while carrying out the investigation.
3.1 Hot Water Bath
A Dewer Flask with a lid and an additional heater. By default the temperature controller is set at 100°C.
3.2 Heated Metal Furnace
This is made of a brass block fitted with a resin-cloth. Its electricity is supplied by a transformer.
3.3 Ice bath
This is also a flask containing an insulated lid made of resin-cloth
3.4 Digital resistance Ohmmeter and thermocouple mV meter
This equipment is used as digital resistance ohmmeter and a thermocouple mV meter.
1. Direct Thermocouple Input
2. Resistance Thermometer
3. Heated Metal Furnace
4. Ice Bath
5. Water Bath Controller
6. Hot Water Bath
