Implications of Report on the Future of Nursing
Introduction
A review of 2010 report by the institute of medicine reveals that there is progress in nursing education, practices, and nursing leadership. For many years nursing education has evolved since its inception and formalization, the profession has grown to hold more than three million members alone in United State. Practice has changed slowly to suit more sophisticated approaches and healthcare centred. Training undergone by healthcare workers promotes professionalism and guidance in hospital (Robert et al., 2014). Nurses have been impacted positively by the report from the institute. The report recognizes changes that have taken place in advance nursing practices, leadership and overall education attained by nurses as a key point that build up professional nursing. Therefore this review focuses on the impacts of the report entitled The Future of Nursing, Leading Change Advancing Healthcare by Fitzpatrick, et al. (2010). subsequently this review will centre on nursing education, nursing practices and nurses’ role as leaders.
Impacts of report on nursing education
The report suggests that, nurses should have a higher level of education and qualification consequently impacts on the current level of education of most nurses. Standard of education required by the report should be a competent and able to understand problems encountered in nursing career (Fitzpatrick, et al., 2010). Competencies needed for nurses according to report should enable nurses to deliver high-quality care, safe and sound in the hospital. Also, education level of nurse should let him or her to lead, develops policies, carries out research, and applies evidence-based practices and facilitated teamwork among nursing profession. The report, therefore, called upon nursing community to take the roles provided by technology and to fill the expanding opportunities in information management system. The report impacts on performance of healthcare workers to collaborate and keep the teamwork spirit upheld. Consequently the report impacts positively on the current levels of education and opportunities available for nurses. The results generated by the report will see more nurses seize opportunities in the technological frontier in nursing and teamwork building among nurses and other professions.
Impacts on nursing practices
Most nurses in various hospitals and in different state are licensed and can carry out various practices in hospital or community clinics. Finding by the report suggests that many healthcare workers have been registered in different states which have their rules of leading nurses has their practice and nurse patients. As a result nurses at the primary level especially graduates from colleges require smooth transition. Practices and training to attained level of competence required in nursing practices, this report impacts negatively on nurses who have low level of qualification since they are not allowed in some state to administer medicine to patients without supervision of physician (Dossey et al., 2013). Consequently, nurse practitioners in some states are allowed to handle patients has they deem fit without presence of a doctor. The laws in those states are made such that nurse can carry out their practices without interferences.
