Reading 5: Research Paper

The paper that we decided to write about discusses user interaction controls with augmented reality glasses. The main focus of the paper is that there aren’t many solid solutions for touch control interfaces with augmented reality glasses. Their proposed solution is a dual-sided touch interface that is interwoven into a user’s pants pocket. They argue that this solution is much less awkward than current solutions including voice input, buttons on the glasses, a separate handheld control, or motion tracking because it draws upon familiar smart phone interactions and isn’t awkward to use in mobile situations. We agree that this implementation would be easier for new users to quickly understand because of it’s similarity to smartphone use and we also agree that it would greatly improve the mobile interaction process regarding AR glasses.

Due to the fact that this research paper directly addresses smart glasses technology it relates to our project in many ways. After reading this paper we realized that we could have put more thought into mobile study options. We didn’t think AR glasses had a viable solution for mobile use, but after reading this we realized we could have implemented some “on-the-go” study functionality as this was a common request by users from our contextual inquiries. Another issue we noticed with our project was that most people couldn’t remember the multiple gestures we had with our initial paper prototype, so we simplified to use one gesture. However, after reading this research paper we realized our system’s interactions could be much more natural by utilizing an interactive design that our users are already familiar with. I’m not sure if our solution improves upon what this paper discusses because we weren’t as focused on the mobile interaction of users and AR glasses.
