Introduction
Each year, the World Economic Forum conducts a Global Gender Gap report, assessing and ranking countries in terms of gender equality. More specifically, the report tracks changes in equality between men and women by analysing female participation in four key categories: the economy, education, health and politics. In 2015, the report listed the Nordic countries Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Finland in the top; positions that have remained unchanged since the first Global Gender Gap report in 2006. In 2015, France was ranked as number 15 in the world (WEF: Global Gender Gap Report, 2015)[1]. With official rankings as well as personal experiences in mind, we find it interesting to further research where the French stand with regards to gender equality issues. More specifically, do nationalities and cultures affect young adults’ attitudes towards gender equality?
Previous studies and Literature
Studies within social psychology show that women and men have been expected to inhabit different roles in marriage and households, generally referring to heterosexual relationships. However, other studies, for example by Bolzendahl & Myers (2004), have shown that both men and women in developed countries became more egalitarian in the 1990s (believing that men and women are equal) compared to previous periods. As stated above, the Nordic countries are the world’s frontrunners when it comes to gender equality, but even in these countries there are still statistics and research showing the prevalence of gender gaps and gender discrimination (WEF: Global Gender Gap Report, 2015).
