Conversation occurs when two or three people exchange messages- whether face-to-face over the telephone. (they can be verbal or non verbal).
Conversation in 5 stages
1. Opening
• Greetings (verbal and non verbal )
• Verbal
• verbal salutes (hello)
• initiating the topic ( the reason for …)
• making a reference to each other ( hey Tom, whats up?)
• personal inquires (“how are you doing, whats new )
• Non verbal
• different in the degree of similarities
2. Feedforward
• General idea of the conversation topic
• Sets the tone of the topic
• Time required
• Examples of feedforward
• estimate the receptivity of the other person to what your going to say (test the waters)
• consistent with your subsequent message
3. Business
• you converse to fulfil one of several of the general purposes of interpersonal communication : to learn, relate influence, play or help
• difference between emails and face to face ( no permanent record of the interactions)
4. Feedback
• you reflect back on the conversation
