Corrections and Treatments
The juvenile system works comparable in role as the adult system because they both assist in rehabilitation and changing people’s lives to get them back on the right path in a positive way. The juvenile criminal justice system has programs such as community-based treatments that help treat diverse problems amongst juveniles. Community treatment is used for juveniles that are not a danger to the community and has a better chance of being rehabilitated in the community instead of in jail. Another program is called aftercare program, which help slowly integrate delinquents into the community instead of just putting them back into the streets. Understanding these two different programs will help you understand the treatment ability and juvenile corrections.
There is a diversity of organizations and community-based centers in the United States. The most frequently used in most communities are residential treatment programs such as group homes, house arrest, and probation. House arrest, which is often used with electronic monitoring, is a treatment in which delinquents must adhere to the courts order and stay out of trouble. This allows the juvenile sentenced to probation to remain in the community but are home stricken and must remain during specified periods with random visits and phone calls. Another community-based treatment is probation, which is used to handle offenders without imprisonment. Juveniles on probation have regular inspections with a probation officer who ensures that they are following the rules set forth of them allowing them to continue to be part of the community.
Institutionalization is another area that is presented to juvenile delinquents in the juvenile justice system. Institutionalizing juveniles in these secure facilities has a negative and positive impact on delinquent offenders in the juvenile justice system. It is a last resort for juveniles because it makes them worse before they went in. Two issues affecting institutionalized juveniles are mental issues and overcrowding. With many institutions being overcrowded, a lot of violence occurs because of this and more juveniles are transported to emergency rooms.
