Many laws are passed and defeated without much notice or fanfare. Then there are some that have constant attention. Oregon residence voted to pass Measure 16 with a 51% majority is one of these under constant national discussion much like Roe vs Wade still is. Measure 16 is now known as the Death with Dignity Act. The Death with Dignity Act allows medical patients who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness whose life expectancy is less than six months can obtain a prescription for a lethal dose of phenobarbital or secobarbital. It seems fairly easy to drink a medicine that will cause the patient to lose consciousness and die in an average of 25 minutes as stated in the data collection by Oregon health Division report for 2013.
The topic I am writing about for unit 2 is truancy in high schools. I became interested in the subject by randomly searching takepart.com. I saw an article about kids going that jail caught my eye. Also the video about the NYC public school lottery had my attention. I found a video “the Lotto” and it addressed delinquency also.
It interests me mostly from growing up in an age of no tolerance policy. I saw many people I went to school with just give up all together. Many people have extenuating circumstances family illness, transportation, language barrier. It seems there is always a reason. I think that schools and the rate of completion where schools get federal money has kept them from having kids simple repeat a grade. Or the fact that some kids study better outside of a formal class setting needs to be looked at closer. Once a child is marked delinquent I believe places a stigma and mental road block for the child and ultimately takes away their natural passion for education.
I hope to learn what reasons effect the truancy of students. Why actual imprisonment is an option for this and why it is a crime. Why is education a law and to what extent age level or grade level. Is this federal, state or local
