This paper will discuss the selection process for a hiring a caregiver for a home healthcare company and the performance appraisals that are conducted for said caregivers. Two of the most important factors that go into retaining employees are the process in which they are selected and on-boarded and the continuous feedback they receive through their performance appraisals. The selection process is the first interaction that a potential employee has with the company that they might one day be retiring with. The performance appraisal is a vehicle that can improve and advance an employee to a position or level that they may have not been otherwise been prepared or confident with simple coaching and feedback.
The recruiting process and selection process go hand in hand; during the recruiting stage the human resources (HR) department is advertising the open position in order to increase the number of applicants whose qualifications meet the job requirements and the needs of the organization. The selection process is to reduce the number of applicants brought in from the recruiting process and is one of the most important steps to ensure that the right people are placed in the right job that best utilizes there skill sets for a particular job. Getting the best individuals for the job will help ensure the business has the best chance for success opposed to spending time and resources fixing problems with individuals that may have not been the best fit for a position. Selection is an ongoing process due to turnover (Bohlander & Snell, 2010). One of the biggest hurdles for any company is to be able to successfully identify good candidates for job vacancies within the company. Online applications have become one of the biggest and most popular resources in the past few years for human resource departments to use for locating potential candidates. The advantages to using online applications is that the human resource departments can fill their job opening quickly and also tend to appeal to a diverse group of applicants. The disadvantage is that human resource departments are flooded with applications that do not meet the basic job requirements.
A useful tool for selecting potential candidates is utilizing test to measure the skills and abilities of potential candidates. This is a useful tool if they have been laid out correctly and properly used for the position. For example, you would not want to use a technically based test to evaluate or gauge a person that is applying for a non-technical position. It is important that the information received from testing an applicant is valid. Therefore the same test should be given to all applicants once its validity is verified by the HR department (Bohlander & Snell, 2010). Interviewing is the tool that carries the most weight in the whole process.
