Do Video Games Kill and Response Summary
Do Video Games Kill?
Video games and the younger culture have been a topic that has been discussed around the nation for years. Some think that they don’t do any harm, some think that they do cause havoc to young kids lives. There have been times that scientist and people of that sort have tried to categorize acts of violence caused by teens as influenced from video games but most times there is something bigger that’s wrong with them. That’s what the author of “Do Video Games Kill?” was referring to, the upbringing up violence displayed by video games. Karen Sternheimer argues that video game titles that were coming alone was damaging the youth instead of uplifting them. He says that, they mess up the way kids think, make them want to become more violent and act in more violence as around this time that the article was put out that there were school shootings going on.
Violence has always been around but it’s normally been adults that were committing such terrible crimes. That’s until the introduction of violent video games such as “Doom” and others were brought to the mass public back in the early 1990s. It was good for the economy as revenue was being made, but as far as some scientist say, this time was terrible for our youth. The average white, middle class teen around this time would probably be spending his leisure time playing the “Doom” title killing people on the screen so in tuned to the television screen letting life pass him by. Scientist and Sternheimer argue that since teens spend so much time inside their television screen, that world that they are in becomes a reality to them. They begin wanting to act out what they do on the game in real life, which could bring major conflict.
Kids were so enticed to playing these video games that around the time, that when chaos started happening, video games were one of the reasons that people said teens started school shootings. Around the time of the Columbine shootings, video games were really criticized for being very violent.
