According to Arlene Skolnick and Jerome Skolnick’s article “Family in Transition,” how have families changed in the recent decades? What are the four myths of the family? What are the three revolutions (a.k.a. triple revolution) that have transformed the family?

Families have changed in recent decades from a number of issues: money, responsibilities, teen pregnancies, technology, the want to be independent, and countless other reasons. Money is a huge issue as to how and why family dynamics have changed in recent years. Having only one person in a household work and bring home money just is not enough these days so the “breadwinner” title is now on both parents having to work and make money to keep their family afloat. In today’s society teen pregnancy happens quiet often and because of that it changes the family dynamic, sometimes the father is completely out of the child’s life or the parents of the new mother step in and raise the new child. Another reason for change in families is divorce. Today it seems as if divorce is an easy way out and a word thrown around to loosely. Many couples no longer take the time to fix the problem and jump straight to the point and divorce. Those are just some examples of how families have changed in the recent decades. The four myths of the family are The Myth of Universality, The Myth of Family Harmony, The Myth of Parental Determinism and last, The Myth of Stable, Harmonious Past. The three revolutions, also known as the triple revolution, are The Post-Industrial Family, The Life Course Revolution and A Psychological Revolution.

According to Scott Coltrane in “Engendering Children,” what messages do children get about gender from children’s stories and nursery rhymes? What is psychoanalytic gender theory? What is gender schema theory? What are the gender differences in the treatment of infants? What are the gender differences in treatment of children?
