Feminist Motherhood And Its Definition
Can a woman have both roles as a mother and a feminist? Or can you only be attached to one role, as either a mother or as a feminist? Being feminist supports gender equality for females while motherhood supports the bond between the mother and her child. But what is the definition of Feminist Motherhood? I believe Feminist Motherhood is a mother who supports feminist movements aiming for equal opportunity and seeking for social justice while taking the time to love, show affection, and care for her child.
Society today defines feminist differently. Many come up with assumptions that being a feminist are gender-restricted by only females, or the image of feminists are radical men-haters, with unattractive features, butch figured bodies, carrying a firearm. Obviously, this is not what a feminist looks like. In reality, there are no specific looks that define a feminist and both males and females can become a feminist. Feminism is a movement to enlighten people on women’s rights where there are no restrictions between both sexes not only regarding equality but also promoting reproductive rights, bodily integrity and autonomy.
Motherhood is an emotional, physical, and psychological bond between a mother and her offspring. When I think of the word Motherhood, I automatically picture a tender, loving mother embracing her child. But I also imagine a strong mother with her head held high, holding her child with strength and commitment.
Feminist Motherhood is a strong willed woman who has the ability to stand up for what she believes in; such as equal opportunity, social justice, reproductive rights, etc., but she can also be a terrified, exhausted, unprepared woman who raises a child for the first time with exciting, challenging, and yet humbling experiences.
