Six dollars lost to one dollar won--that is the ratio of money lost to money won while gambling. Gambling comes in numerous different forms, but all forms of gambling cause people not only money problems, but also mental and social problems. Gambling is similar to substance abuse and alcohol abuse but the difference is that there is a saturation point with substance and alcohol abuse. The saturation point is when the alcohol or substance abuser passes out; there is no saturation point in gambling. Gambling certainly should not be legal because of all the negatives that it can cause for every part of society.

Gambling is a downward spiral of money loss which continues to go until the gambler hits rock bottom; gambling should be illegal because it is duping the gamblers into providing money for someone else's use. Gambling not only affects you, but also your family: "Problem gambling, like any addictive behavior, affects the lives of individuals and those close to them" (Beck, 1). For example, instead of spending your money on your family for food, clothing, shelter, or other needs, you will be spending it on gambling which will create more pressure and stress for the family. Gambling also can make your children feel left out and attention-deprived due to you, as the parent, putting most or all your concentration on gambling. Furthermore, gambling increase crime within society (Benedict, 1). Gambling is basically an addiction and causes crime because of the need to fulfill the desire to gamble at any cost. For instance, if you are gambling for money against other people and lose, you would probably be infuriated and want to fight or cause problems with others gambling. Those are just a few of the innumerable reasons why gambling should be illegal.

Family, friends, and all of society are affected negatively by gambling. It should absolutely be illegal. Gambling is a drug that you cannot stop using until you are at the bottom.
